You might even have heard it already. It’s the song blaring out of loud speakers before the start of every match at the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh, which got underway on Sunday night.
The song, as if you didn’t already know, is called ‘Char Chokka Hoi Hoi’, which roughly translates to ‘Fours, Sixes, Fun and Games’. And really, that’s what T20 cricket is all about (sorry, bowlers).
With inspirational lyrics such as “16 cricket nations, how exciting” and “bombastic rocking”, the tune definitely has the verbal measure of whatever J-Lo, Pitbull and Claudia Leitte come up with for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
But it’s the energetic beat and fast-paced tempo that really make Char Chokka Hoi Hoi a hit.
Composed by renowned Bangladeshi singer Fuad Al Muktadir and sung in a mixture of Bangla and English by an ensemble of young vocalists, the song captures the energy of the country’s fanatical cricket fans.
The video clip features an accompanying dance that is sure to outdo the “Waka Waka” dance made famous by Shakira at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
